In this edition of the gardening magazine, Jim and George are planning for jam tomorrow as Jim sorts out the raspberries, while George is a wee bit more exotic and tends to the fig and the vine. In a mission to find How to Grow a Gardener, Jim visits the enlightened Breadalbane Academy in Aberfeldy, which has practical gardening on the curriculum as well as a beautiful community garden to show for it. It  was  a  fine  autumn  day  at  Beechgrove  this week and Jim and Carole were at the back of the Vegetable Plot looking at the cordon apples along the wall where there is a very promising crop. These cordons are the oldest apple trees in the garden  as  they  came  from  the  original Beechgrove garden where they were planted by Jim and George Barron in 1978, and were moved to the current Beechgrove Garden in 1995.  Jim explained that when they were moved the

Winter squash can be grown as scrambling or climbing plants. In the polytunnel they are being grown on pea netting for support which will give them plenty of room to grown.

In the Beechgrove Garden, Jim is dealing with hardy veg in the veg plot, while Carole is starting off some tender veg in the polytunnel. Brian Cunningham, head gardener of Scone Palace, is back at Beechgrove to finish the new alpine garden planting. This is great as it means that you can confidently go off on your holidays knowing that your plants will be kept watered and fed all by themselves.  The heating i

The Beechgrove Garden ep.7 2016 This post was moved here: https://video-clump.com/2018/02/15/ beechgrove-garden-episode-7-2016 Carole was in the Greenhouse for the final part of her series on windowsill gardening. This time it was all about growing microgreens –full of proteins and vitamins making a healthy addition to snacks and sandwiches, also the latest trend with chefs. Last week Carole recommended getting an electric propagator to get seedsstarted but the alternative is an unheated propagator which could simply sit on the windowsill. Any kind of vegetable seed can be harvested as a microgreen and they too are very easy to grow. These are not like the sprouting seeds, here you wait till they have grown to seedling stage, cut them off with scissors - this is thepart you eat. One example is a radish which can be sown in a tray of compost, covered with more compost and placed in an unheated propagator. This canthen be harvested for its leaves in a few weeks’time

Beechgrove Garden ep.20 2015  Meanwhile, Carole and George are helping out with the last stages of the creation of a new community garden with the good folk of Inverbervie. The new community garden will be the central feature to a garden trail around the village, designed for locals to enjoy as a florific community space and to have tourists stop and take time in the village.

The Beechgrove Garden 2016 ep.5 Fungal Valley Whereas Carole was growing her mushrooms intensively on the window sill, Chris has a bigger project in mind for a damp and deeply shaded area near to the stumpery which he created 3 years ago: a fungal valley for Beechgrove so that we can grow and harvest our own mushrooms outside at Beechgrove. Fungi in the wild occur mostly in wooded areas because of all of the rotting wood and leaf litter, and many fungi have a mutually beneficial association with tree roots. At Beechgrove Chris found an example of these beneficial mycorrhizal fungi in the more wild and unmanaged part of the garden. There are around 15000 species of fungi resident in the UK

In the Beechgrove Garden, Jim is attempting to turn yellow into green as he tackles the lawn, which has turned a washed-out yellow after all the rains of winter. And continuing the theme of upgrading the 20-year-old Beechgrove Garden, Jim takes on an unloved corner of the low-maintenance garden, removing a rotting fence and pruning a wayward quince. This post was moved :   https://video-clump.com/2017/12/17/ beechgrove-garden-episode-4-2016 / Brian Cunningham visits the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh, which is home to one of the most impressive alpine collections in the world, for inspiration as to how to recreate that in miniature back in Beechgrove.  This week Jim, Carole and Chris started off the programme on the Main Lawn. It was a cool spring day and it was all hands to the pump to make over the lawn after the wet winter. The first job was to get rid of the moss which was clogging up the lawn. Chris was scarifying the lawn by machine and Carole used an open t

Everything is blooming rosy in the Beechgrove Garden as Jim, Carole and Chris catch up with progress of Beechgrove's new/old rose garden. And finding out a bit more about the science of plant genetics, Jim is at Dundee Botanic Garden taking a walk through plant history in their Evolutionary Garden.George is with Lee Street in Bonchester Bridge creating an edible, fruiting hedge as a windbreak to protect her existing productive raised beds.  They admired one of the annuals, Calendula (Pot Marigold) ‘Indian Prince’ with its vivid orange flowers. Jim, Carole and Chris were taking a look at the new standard weeping roses, which Chris had planted here earlier in the series. They are beginning to flower and are looking good. Rosa ‘Super Fairy’ has delicate pink flowers and was under planted with herbaceous perennials in Programme 12 (18th June 2015). The roses although flowering are not quite taking on a weeping shape as yet, which is normal. Chris said that this would start to hap

This is the last visit this season and Carole catches up with the family's progress, harvests some of the new fruit and suggests some final tidying up. Carole is also back in Orkney for the second of her visits. This week Carole visits the Community Garden at Finstown where appropriately for the weather she's looking at damp but inspirational planting.   Jim and Carole were in the Cutting Garden on a lustery day that felt more like autumn than August. Jim was looking at his chrysanthemums, which are protected and supported by a net posi

The tomatoes in the growbags were looking the best and also have the best crops. Surprisingly the plants in the self-watering systems were suffering the most, with the leaves rolled and yellowing and growth stunted. The system with a growbag placed on a wicked reservoir system was full to the top and the compost waterlogged. This post was moved here :   https://video-clump.com/2017/12/12/ beechgrove-garden-episode-16-2015 /  ‎ The plants in the Autopot system were looking a bit better, but the fruit is not ripening in these pots either.Jim also talked about a letter that we have received about the use of the ‘expensive’ watering systems. Jim explained that our aim is always to try the systems and recommend those which work well. Using self-watering systems also means that you can go away on holiday without worrying about the plants. These systems can last 10 years or more if looked after properly, so they can be a worthwhile investment. Featured varieties: Tomato ‘Sungold’ To

At Cove allotments, near Aberdeen, the small plots are packed in cheek-by-jowl making it easy for the plotters to socialise and of course, learn from each other. As Jim says, 'every day is a school day'. How to achieve amazing amaryllises and productive pepper plants. Beechgrove Garden ep.14 2015
